I haven’t written too much about music on here.. which is kind of bizarre now that I get to thinking about it. 90% of my days are spent listening to my Soundcloud playlist. I’ve repost literally everything. Justin Bieber, Stevie Wonder, Future, and The Social Experiment; but lately all I’ve been wanting to listen to is Kehlani. I have to shoutout Third Eye because he’s the one who actually put me on to her newest mixtape, You Should Be Here.
For me, it was all about matching her image to her sound. I’ve seen pictures of her all over social media, mainly her tattoo devoted to the Queen herself, Lauryn Hill. Si got to telling me about how she’s from Oakland, mainly explaining how she’s overall just a really dope chick; from her music, to her style, to her message.
Hailing from the Bay Area, Kehlani was originally a dancer who decided to focus on her vocals after an unfortunate knee injury. While her notable influences include Lauryn Hill, India Arie, and Musiq Soulchild; she has something different that separates her from other soul/R&B artists out right now. She describes her sound as, “feel good music.” I can definitely cosign that.
It’s also so refreshing for a female artist to come out and speak on some real shit. Not just about being heartbroken + damaged from prior relationships. She talks about being young and being sprung. The reality of young females everywhere. Rejection. Relations. Real life shit. I can definitely relate to some specific tracks on her new mixtape. There’s also a prevalent presence of feminism in her music as well, which is something I personally believe we should see more of. Females uplifting females.
I’m excited to revert to her earlier work & listen to some of older music! I definitely recommend her Soundcloud if you love good music. She’s about to blow tf up.
